For The Cloaking, Joiri Minaya researched ethnobotany to create original tropical prints with allegorical motifs symbolizing untold narratives of colonization. According to the artist, the designs appropriate illustrations in botanical catalogues created by early settlers to categorize plants, but feature “plants of resistance” used in ethnomedicine and purging rituals, or traditions of despojo, practiced by Native and Afro-diasporic peoples in the Americas.
